A snowstorm that has been sweeping through Canada's Atlantic provinces since Saturday has led to wide-spread power outage, flight delays and flooding, killing two people and injuring many more, reports reaching said Sunday.

The storm dumped up to 30 centimeters of snow on the region, accompanied by dangerously strong winds.

It knocked out power to tens of thousands of residents across Atlantic Canada. Nearly 45,000 homes and businesses in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island lost power at the height of the storm on Saturday, the Canadian Press said.

The storm caused flooding in some areas due to high tides and large waves. In New Brunswick, the weather system prompted the town of Port Elgin to declare a state of emergency after dozens of homes, businesses and cottages were flooded. A storm surge pushed water levels several meters above normal. By Sunday afternoon, the state of emergency had been lifted.

The storm also caused travel disruptions. Ten flights were cancelled at Halifax Stanfield International Airport on Saturday. Seven more were delayed by the storm. Flight delays were also reported in Fredericton and Moncton, N.B.

One of the two killed was a man who was poisoned by carbon monoxide from the generator that was being used to supply his home in Three Fathom Harbor, N.S., during a power outage caused by the storm. A woman from the home is still receiving treatment in hospital.

Meanwhile, an 83-year-old man in Cornwallis, N.S., died in a snow bank next to his home. Police believe the man had fallen on Saturday night and then died from exposure as the storm pelted the region.
